Press Conference Announcement: Proposed Sports Ground With Pavilion for President’s College, Kotte

Kotte, 4th August 2025 – A significant milestone in the development of President’s College, Sri Jayewardenepura was marked today with a press conference held at the college auditorium to announce the ambitious proposal for a new sports ground with a state-of-the-art pavilion. The event brought together key stakeholders, including school administration, alumni association representatives, project consultants, and community leaders, all united in their vision to enhance the sporting infrastructure and facilities for the college’s students.

The press conference was chaired by Mrs. Bagya Rupasinghe, Principal of President’s College, Kotte, who emphasized the transformative impact this facility will have on the physical education and overall development of students. Joining her at the head table were Mr. Chanaka Jayatillake, Founder and President of the Friends of President’s College Association (FPCA), who serves as Project Chairman for this initiative. Mr. Jayatillake outlined the association’s commitment to providing world-class sporting facilities that will nurture young athletic talent and promote a culture of health and fitness within the school community.

The technical aspects of the project were presented by Mr. Channa Wijayapala, the Project Architect and Consultant, who shared preliminary designs and architectural renderings of the proposed sports ground and pavilion. The facility is envisioned to include modern amenities, spectator seating, changing rooms, and practice areas that meet international standards. Mr. Duminda Kularathna, serving as Project Manager for Construction, provided insights into the implementation timeline and construction methodology, assuring all stakeholders of quality execution and timely completion.

Representatives from both the President’s College Union (PCU) and FPCA expressed their enthusiasm for the project. Mr. Menaka Jayawardena, Vice President of PCU, and Mr. Asanka Sanjeewa Perera, who holds dual roles as Vice President of both PCU and FPCA, spoke about the strong alumni network’s dedication to giving back to their alma mater. Mr. Obeysekera Rathnayake, Secretary of the School Development Society, highlighted the collaborative approach taken by various stakeholder groups. Mrs. Sandeepa Wijayanthi, a former Sports Teacher at President’s College, shared valuable perspectives on the sporting needs of students based on her years of experience, while Mrs. Rasika Perera, Assistant Treasurer of FPCA, outlined the fundraising strategies and financial framework supporting the project.

The press conference concluded with an open forum where media representatives and invited guests posed questions about the project’s scope, funding mechanisms, and expected timeline for completion.
